Australia has role to play in Ghana’s latest phase of development

20 Aug 2013

Fast-growing Ghana is on the brink of a new phase of development and Australia is ready to assist in areas that extend beyond its traditional mining capabilities, according to the Australian Trade Commission’s (Austrade) representative.

“As one of the fastest-growing economies on the continent, Ghana stands on the brink of a new phase of development and Australia stands ready to assist,” Trade Commissioner – West Africa Gordon Chakaodza said.

Australia helps Ghana manage its resources in ethical, sustainable ways but its expertise extends further, Mr Chakaodza said.

“Whether through investment or the transfer of skills and technology, Australia has the capabilities to help Ghana achieve its potential, particularly in the fields of mining, education, agriculture and water management,” he told Mining Weekly.

Mr Chakaodza, based in the capital city, Accra, was appointed Austrade’s first ever trade commissioner to West Africa just over a year ago in response to a steady expansion of economic ties between Australia and Ghana.

“Australian companies are regarded as leaders in corporate social responsibility and take these obligations seriously in this regard, ensuring communities affected by mining also have the chance to benefit,” he said.

Mr Chakaodza’s comments were in the run-up to the Africa Down Under Conference, where Austrade is sponsoring the Australia Lounge for businesses interested in learning about the continent’s opportunities and meeting business contacts.
