Australia’s Marshall Day named acoustics consultant for Jiangsu Grand Theatre
24 May 2013
Marshall Day Acoustics has been appointed the acoustics consultant for the Jiangsu Grand Theatre project in Nanjing, marking the Australian company’s latest project in China.
So far this year, Marshall Day has been contracted to provide acoustic design services across China, including the Tianjin Concert Hall in the north and the Sichuan Theatre project in Chengdu in the west, as well as the Jiangsu Grand Theatre in eastern China.
The Jiangsu provincial government has spent more than a decade finalising plans for the theatre, set to be one of the largest performing arts projects in China with a budget of 2 billion renminbi (A$333.4 million).
The theatre is to be on a site of 200,000 square meters. It includes a 2300-seat opera house, a 1500-seat concert hall and a 1000-seat drama theatre. A fourth building houses conference facilities.
Marshall Day has started design work in collaboration with architect East China Architectural Design & Research Institute (ECADI) and German-based theatre planner Kunkel.
The Melbourne-based company is designing the theatre’s acoustics, as well as overseeing the venue’s sound insulation and noise and vibration control.
Marshall Day has been designing performance spaces for more than 30 years. It has undertaken projects Australia, New Zealand, China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, the Middle East, Europe and the United States.
Over the last 10 years, the company has successfully expanded their business in China, providing acoustic consulting services on major cultural venues including the Beijing Television Theatre, Xian Concert Hall, Guangzhou Opera House, Yixing Grand Theatre and Zhuhai Grand Theatre.
