Food for thought

Australian manufacturers face tough challenges in the Asian Century, according to Minister for Trade and Competitiveness Craig Emerson.

Australia is not a low-skill, low-wage country but it can use the heat of competition from Asia to expand its manufacturing capabilities and focus on its other attributes, as set out in the Government’s recent innovation statement, Dr Emerson wrote.

The key is using the nation’s strengths, including its high-quality food production, to transform Asian Century opportunities into rewarding jobs for Australian manufacturers, farmers and service providers, he wrote in a recent editorial.
