Austrade media release

Wednesday, 19 December 2007

Austrade, the Australian Government’s export development agency, is encouraging local Australian IT companies to take advantage of the growing opportunities in India’s $18.5 billion IT market by attending the sub-continent’s most prestigious trade event, the annual NASSCOM India Leadership Forum.

Austrade and the Australian Information Industry Association (AIIA) are taking a mission of Australian ICT firms to attend the conference. The mission will also visit Bangalore and New Delhi where Austrade is organising pitching sessions to present niche Australian solutions to Indian systems integrators and resellers.

The National Association of Software and Service Companies (NASSCOM) is the premier trade body and chamber of commerce for the Indian IT software and services industry. The India Leadership Forum is the association’s flagship event, attracting over 1,500 delegates from 22 countries last year. Global industry leaders including representatives from the G1000 and Fortune500 companies, senior government officials and academics will attend the event, to be held in February next year.

Austrade’s Senior Export Adviser for ICT, Munish Sharma, said India’s maturing ICT market had created lucrative partnership opportunities for innovative Australian businesses.

“India’s ICT market is growing at 8 per cent annually, and the overall economic boom is also providing opportunities in sectors such as retail, telecommunications, banking, finance and insurance services, and construction,” he said.

“Indian companies are keen to partner with businesses offering specialised & unique ICT solutions and they are well-positioned to present these technologies to the key players from these sectors. These companies cater to both the domestic and global markets, so by partnering with Indian technology companies, Australian businesses can access customers not only in India, but also in the US, Europe and Asia.”

Canberra-based ContentKeeper Technologies is one such example. ContentKeeper recently signed a major agreement with India’s largest systems integrator, HCL Infotech, following an Austrade-organised pitching session with NASSCOM’s Australian representatives in March.

Vice President Manish Kumar said the NASSCOM event was an excellent networking opportunity for a medium-sized company like ContentKeeper.

“We were absolutely new to the Indian market and we met our biggest client there,” Mr Kumar said. “We got the right contacts and right advice for expansion into India. Now, as a result of our partner’s strong presence in Asia, we’re selling into Hong King and Singapore.”

According to NASSCOM Australia’s Chairman, Sudhir Mathur, Australian companies serious about taking their business to India should attend the Leadership Forum.

“The NASSCOM Leadership Forum attracts the who’s who of the international ICT industry all under one roof. All the big players will be there,” he said.

This business mission is part of Utsav Australia (Celebrate Australia), a major Australian Government initiative to promote Australian industry capability to the Indian business audience and to help Australian companies win new business in India. It is also supported by State Governments and the Australia India Business Council.
