Austrade supports major ICT push into Asia

Austrade media release

Monday October 11, 2010

The Australian Trade Commission (Austrade) is supporting high-level missions to Asia promoting Australia’s ICT capability and appeal as a technology investment destination.

Starting today (11-15 October), the Australian Information Industry Association (AIIA), National ICT Australia (NICTA) and 21 ICT companies will promote Australia’s  strengths in ICT with the aim of capturing business opportunities in  China at events in Beijing and Shanghai.

This will be followed by a Digital Economy and Broadband Application mission (18-26 October) to Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, held in conjunction with the Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Industry (DIISR) examining the benefits of high speed broadband and opportunities created by the National Broadband Network (NBN) rollout.

Austrade’s global ICT team leader Janelle Casey said both missions highlighted the benefits of closer ICT trade ties with Asia.

“Australia has a talented ICT research sector with a track-record of success and leading capabilities. For example, Australian innovation is at the core of Wireless LAN, the technology behind Google Maps, and the Australian developed L4 microkernel used on 800 million mobile phones worldwide,” Ms Casey said.

“The diversity of companies attending the China mission demonstrates the huge potential of the market.

“In 2010, revenue from China's Internet Service Industry is expected to total $26.44 billion, up 14.2 per cent from 2009, and the mobile telecoms services industry overall is valued at US$65billion.

“Attending the event will be General Manager of Telstra China, as well as Bond Wireless, Clive International, Digital Techniques, Duons MCO Pty Ltd, Exinda Networks, Inference Communications, Mikoh Corporation Ltd, New Media Innovation, Obsidian Consulting, Omnistar Pty Ltd, Quickcomm Pty Ltd, SMARTBILL PTY LTD, Strapper Technologies Pty Ltd, Teletech Pty Ltd, UTbox.

“Companies will participate at P&T Expo Comm China in Beijing, the largest ICT industry event ever to be held in the world's fastest growing major telecom sector, featuring a sales environment rich in capital investment.

“The mission will then move to the Shanghai World Expo for a special VIP event showcasing Australian technologies and R&D capabilities at the Australia Pavilion.

The ensuing Digital Economy and Broadband Application mission (18-26 October) in Japan, Korea and Singapore will not only study the potential future business benefits to Australia of high-speed broadband, but also highlight R&D opportunities in Australia.

“Australian companies can learn from key trading partners which already have world-leading broadband at the heart of their economies, with the mission also highlighting the potential the NBN offers to companies undertaking R&D and locating innovation activities in Australia,” Ms Casey said.

“In 2010 Japan will spend an estimated US$348 billion on ICT, South Korea US$76 billion, and Singapore US$20 billion.

“These countries are also OECD leaders in IT-related patents as a percentage of total national patents.

“Participants will have the chance to develop a direct understanding of broadband infrastructure and digital economy developments in these leading-edge markets, as well as meet potential customers, alliance partners, and policy-makers.
