Australian business capability will be on show at Shanghai World Expo 2010, one of the largest events ever to be staged in China (May 1 – October 31).
In just under three months 200 countries, 50 international organisations and 70 million visitors will attend Expo on a site comprising nearly six square kilometres of downtown Shanghai.
Austrade’s China country manager Christopher Wright said Australian business will make an important contribution to the staging of Expo.
“As well as a great platform to showcase Australia’s culture and lifestyle to the world, it is also an opportunity promote Australia’s business strengths.
“Australian companies have won Expo related deals in areas as diverse as infrastructure and construction, sustainable design, education, and in the provision of artistic and cultural programs.
“Opportunities will continue to be generated in the redesign and development of the event site following the conclusion of the event,” Mr Wright said.
- In addition to supplying premium steel for construction of the façade and roof of the Australian pavilion, BlueScope Steel has also won deals to supply premium steel for other Expo constructions, including a $6.25 million deal to supply 1,260 metric tonnes of roofing materials for the China Pavilion.
- Sydney’s Dynalite will also supply dim lighting systems for the China Pavilion in a deal worth $2.35 million.
- TAFE NSW, provider of training services to the Australian Pavilion, is contracted to develop master plans for Shanghai 2010 Expo Bureau to implement workforce training, will provide curriculum in English and Mandarin, and continue to seek opportunities with other country pavilions.
- Brisbane’s Urban Art Projects (UAP) was selected from over 100 international tenders to design major sculptures for the eight main entrance areas of the Expo site.
- With joint venture partners Tongji Architecture Design Institute, Australia’s ASPECT Studios has won eco-park design contracts to contribute to the sustainable design of the Nanyuan Waterfront Park, including stormwater treatment solutions, system designs for solar power, rooftop greening, and the adaptation of existing industrial elements and buildings.
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) is leading Australia’s Expo project in collaboration with Commonwealth agencies, state and territory governments and private sector stakeholders.
Austrade is working with DFAT to stage a series of trade and investment events as part of the business program in clean technology, financial services, automobiles, agribusiness, mining and resources and a wide range of other sectors.
