Austrade media release 31 May 2010 Representatives from nine Peruvian-owned mining companies are visiting Australia this week to meet with a range of industry specialists and benefit from their technical expertise. Led by Austrade’s Trade Commissioner for Lima, Daniel Sullivan, the delegation will tour mines in Western Australia and Queensland, and meet with research and development experts and state government officials. “This visit reinforces Australia’s position as a global leader in mining technology, particularly in the development of sustainable processing practices,” Mr Sullivan said. “The delegates are particularly interested in our water management processes and our world-best environmental practices. Mr Sullivan said that the Peruvian mining industry is currently experiencing strong growth and it has the potential to become the leader in Latin America. “Peru is now third in the world, after Canada and Australia, in terms of receiving mining exploration investment. This visit of key decision makers will help boost relationships with Australia, which is one of Peru’s top 10 investors,” he said. The five-day visit will start with a tour of the recently-opened Boddington mine in Western Australia, which when operating at full capacity will be the country’s largest gold mine. Whilst in WA, Mr Sullivan will address a Breakfast Briefing for the Australia-Latin America Business Council, providing an update on trading opportunities in the region. Members of the delegation will also participate in the Briefing along with Austrade’s Senior Trade Commissioner for Latin America, Crispin Conroy. Following meeting with senior executives from WA’s Department of Mines and academics at the CSIRO Australian Resources Research Centre, the delegation will then travel to Queensland. After meetings with researchers at CRC Mining and the Queensland Centre fro Advanced Technology, the trip will conclude with a tour of the Xtrata-owned Mount Isa copper mine. Various meetings have also been scheduled with suppliers of Australia’s cutting-edge mining technologies.
