Austrade media release
7 October 2010
International firms in the clean energy industry will have access for the first time to a new directory of Australian clean energy and environment exporters.
Austrade has launched its Clean Energy and Environment Export Directory which showcases the products and skills of 78 innovative Australian exporters in the clean energy and environment sector.
Austrade’s Kerry Rooney, General Manager Industry, said, “This is an important and useful directory for international buyers of clean energy in a global investment market worth US$162 billion a year”.
“As the world attempts to deal with the challenges of climate change and sustainability, clean energy, water and environment technologies are some of the most important developing industries and green jobs also offer great promise as a source of future employment,” she said.
The Directory was compiled as part of the Australian Government’s three-year $14 million Clean Energy Trade and Investment Strategy, announced in the 2009-10 Budget, and was launched at the All-Energy Australia conference in Melbourne this week.
The Government’s strategy seeks to capitalise on the trade and investment opportunities now emerging as a result of global efforts to tackle climate change and to enhance energy security.
In 2009, Australia invested US$1 billion in clean energy. Emerging markets in China, India, Latin America and the Middle East will continue to offer great opportunities for our exporters and investors.
“Australia’s expertise in clean energy technology is underpinned by its stock of abundant resources,” Ms Rooney said.
“Australia is one of the few countries in the world which has a plentiful supply of virtually all forms of renewable energy, from solar, hot non-volcanic geothermal rocks for geothermal energy, vast tracts of land for bioenergy and abundant wind energy.
“Australia has also become a leader in managing the challenges of water scarcity, with a wealth of sound commercial experience in environmental monitoring and remediation. And there is also great expertise in green building and wave and tidal energy.”
Last year, Austrade assisted 98 Australian clean energy companies to win $76 million in offshore business deals, and facilitated foreign direct investment in clean energy worth $77 million.
Eight investment projects were involved, ranging across the industry from renewable energy and carbon capture and storage to water and energy efficiency.
