Austrade will continue to honour the memory of Craig Senger by funding a scholarship in his name at Monash University for another three years.
In July 2009, Mr Senger was killed in a terrorist attack on the Marriott Hotel in Jakarta. It was his first long-term overseas posting as a Trade Commissioner.
At the time of the attack Mr Senger was attending a business meeting in his role as head of Austrade’s mining and energy team for the ASEAN region.
Austrade colleagues remember him as a talented, generous and decent man who had served Austrade and Australia with distinction.
In November 2009, Austrade decided to honour his memory with the Austrade Craig Senger Scholarship.
The Scholarship is offered to outstanding students who are enrolled in a combined commerce and engineering degree at Monash, Australia’s largest university. Three students have won the scholarship since its inception.
Mr Senger’s widow, Kate, his mother, Joan and sister Cate Saunders attended a signing ceremony this week to renew the scholarship.
In attendance were Professor Tam Sridhar AO, the Dean of Engineering at Monash and Dr Peter Rogers, Chair of the Foundation Board of Management at Monash.
Peter Yuile, Austrade’s Executive Director Education and Corporate, spoke of the passion Mr Senger had for his work.
“The Scholarship is a fitting tribute and a way of remembering his enduring contribution, particularly to the mining and resources sector,” Mr Yuile said.
