Australia’s renowned events specialists at SportAccord Convention

Austrade media release

23 May 2013

Organisers of the world’s biggest sporting events will be able to engage with Australia’s major sport event specialists at the SportAccord Convention in St Petersburg, Russia between 26–31 May.

More than 20 Australian sports events companies will be present to meet with host nation organisers at the official business lounge managed by the Australian Trade Commission, The Business Club presented by Australia Unlimited.

Ian Wing, Austrade’s Senior Trade Commissioner for Russia, said, “The Business Club is a great venue for host nations to meet Australian specialists who offer a wide range of products and services”.

“Australians have a track record of helping host nations do the job while the Club is also the right place to meet discreetly with decision makers from other host nations,” Mr Wing said.

Since the 2000 Sydney Olympics, Australia’s sport event specialists have earned stellar reputations for providing host nations with high quality services in such areas as operational planning and management, security, broadcasting, surface technologies and event cleaning.

At the 2012 London Olympics, about 50 Australian firms completed some of the most significant projects for the Games.

Among dozens of projects, Australians managed the development of the A$2.2 billion Olympic Village project (Lend Lease), built the iconic pink and blue synthetic hockey pitch (Advanced Polymer Technology) and originated the creative engineering behind the Olympic Cauldron (FCT Flames)

Australian sport events firms present at Sport Accord this year will include:

  • Intelligent Risks specialises in providing strategic advice on security, transport, risk and emergency management.  The firm has advised six Olympics, five Commonwealth Games, and three FIFA world cups.
  • Event Knowledge Services provides a full suite of consulting services and knowledge transfer support across the total event landscape, including know-how, information and solutions which are scaled to suit the needs of major events.
  • MI Associates provides business and strategic planning, operational services such as feasibility studies, bid and venue development.
  • Great Big Events produces sport and trophy presentations including medal ceremonies, common domain entertainment.

Greg Bowman, the Managing and Creative director of Great Big Events, said “SportAccord attracts the most esteemed assembly of sporting administrators from right around the globe”.

“So for us, it represents the best opportunity to connect with our key customers, to make new connections, and to reveal genuine business opportunities in the segment,” he said.

The SportAccord Convention in St Petersburg next month is expected to attract about 2000 delegates from over 80 countries along with about 200 media representatives.

Sporting event organisers from the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics, the Incheon 2014 Asian Games, the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympics, the FIFA 2014 World Cup, and the Rio 2016 Olympics in Brazil are expected to be present.

And organisers from the FIFA 2022 World Cup Qatar, along with the bidding cities for the 2020 Olympics–Tokyo, Madrid and Istanbul– are also expected to be present in St Petersburg.
