29 May 2013
Foreign Minister Bob Carr opened a major resources event in Sydney today, addressing ministers, diplomats, businesspeople, academics and journalists from across Latin America and Australia.
Senior government and business representatives from Brazil, Chile, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Guyana, Mexico and Peru are visiting Australia for Latin America Downunder 2013.
Austrade CEO Bruce Gosper will also address Latin America Downunder 2013. He said Australia’s economic resilience, its connections with Asia and its expertise in mining and in mining equipment, technology and services made it an ideal economic partner for Latin America.
“Trade and investment between Australia and Latin American countries is thriving and we continue to work closely to promote it,” Mr Gosper said.
“From small beginnings, Australia’s links with Latin America have expanded rapidly in recent years, mirroring strong growth in the region’s economies.”
“Our relationship is particularly close in the resources sector, where Australian experience and skill in areas like environmental and water management can help unlock Latin America’s great resources potential.”
Latin America Downunder 2013 will feature a range of expert speakers over two days as well as a series of functions and networking opportunities, including a dinner hosted by the Minister for Resources and Energy, Gary Gray.
Austrade, through its business-matching services, has arranged over 40 individual business discussions between Australian companies and their Latin American counterparts at Latin America Downunder 2013.
Several important gatherings will also occur in the margins of Latin America Downunder 2013, including a meeting of the Council on Australia Latin American Relations.
