Australia’s major sporting event specialists will gather in St Petersburg, Russia on 26-31 May to attend the marquee SportAccord Convention.
SportAccord Convention brings host nations together with leading industry specialists, forging partnerships that create the world’s most memorable sporting events.
Through its Silver Partner agreement with SportAccord Convention, the Australian Trade Commission (Austrade) is a key participant, hosting the official business lounge for the Convention, The Business Club presented by Australia Unlimited, while also showcasing Australia’s major sporting event expertise.
More than 20 Australian firms will attend the Convention, which is expected to attract about 2000 delegates from over 80 countries along with about 200 media representatives.
Among the attendees will be sporting event organisers from the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics, the Incheon 2014 Asian Games, the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympics, the FIFA 2014 World Cup, and the Rio 2016 Olympics in Brazil.
Organisers from the FIFA 2022 World Cup Qatar, along with the bidding cities for the 2020 Olympics–Tokyo, Madrid and Istanbul– will also be present in St Petersburg.
Ian Wing, Austrade’s Senior Trade Commissioner in Russia, said Australia’s event specialists had a stellar record helping host nations realise their aspirations, at summer and winter Olympics, FIFA and Rugby World Cups, Asian Games, Arab Games and Commonwealth Games.
“The skill profiles of Australian firms are broad but deep. They include bidding and planning, venue design and construction, as well as services such as event staging and operations management,” Mr Wing said.
“The great thing about SportAccord Convention is it brings together all the major global players in the industry. If you are planning a major sports event, you really need to be there,” he said.
SportAccord Convention’s managing director, Nis Hatt, welcomed Austrade as a partner.
“This is a great opportunity for delegates from nations hosting some of the biggest major sporting events in the next few years. They will be able to meet Australian specialists, who represent some of the best in the sports event business,” Mr Hatt said.
“They will also be able to use Austrade’s extremely useful app, Track Record, which provides a comprehensive guide to Australian major sporting event providers,” he said.
Since the Sydney 2000 Olympics, Australian major sporting event specialists have been involved with the organising committees or sporting bodies of over 40 of the world’s major events.
Almost 50 Australian companies completed projects for the London 2012 Games, for example, including the development and project management for the A$2.2b Olympic
Village, building the iconic pink and blue synthetic hockey pitch and the innovative engineering behind the Olympic cauldron.
Austrade’s business program has been supporting the major sporting event industry since the Sydney 2000 Olympics, where it hosted over 15,000 guests.
