Reporting fraud

Fraud against Austrade may be perpetrated by internal staff and contractors (internal fraud), members of the public (external fraud), or acts of collusion between both internal and external parties. Fraudulent activities impacting on Austrade may include the following things:

  • theft
  • accounting fraud (false invoices, misappropriation etc.)
  • unlawful use of, or obtaining property, equipment, material or services
  • causing a loss, or avoiding and/or creating a liability
  • providing false or misleading information to the Commonwealth, or failing to provide information where there is an obligation to do so
  • misuse of Commonwealth assets, equipment or facilities
  • making, or using false, forged or falsified documents
  • wrongfully using Commonwealth information or intellectual property
  • bribery, corruption or abuse of office
  • relevant bankruptcy offences
  • any offences of a like nature to those listed above.

Should you wish to report an allegation or suspicion of fraud, you are encouraged to provide as much information as you can about the circumstances surrounding the matter in question. Austrade is committed to protecting the confidentiality of everyone who reports suspected fraud. Leaving your name and contact details are not necessary; however, it does help to investigate your allegations and suspicions. Austrade is subject to the Privacy Act 1988 and the Australian Trade Commission Act 1985 which require that all confidential information remain protected. As such, all records will be held securely and no information will be passed on to other departments or agencies except as privacy laws allow.

Austrade General Fraud Hotline

The General Fraud Hotline is provided for those who wish to confidentially report allegations or suspicions of fraud against Austrade and its operations within Australia and overseas. All matters can be reported through the general hotline; however, should your suspicions relate to the Export Market and Development Grant Scheme (EMDG), you are encouraged to report directly to the EMDG Fraud Hotline.
