Austrade media release
Tuesday, 16 October, 2007
Austrade is helping Australian businesses export their innovative law enforcement products and services to the United States by showcasing their products at the world’s largest law enforcement exposition, the 114th annual International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), which kicked off in New Orleans this week.
Daniel Sullivan, Austrade’s Washington-based USA Selling to Government Team Leader, said attending exclusive events like the IACP provided vital exposure and created greater opportunities for Australian businesses to access this elusive market.
“IACP is the world’s oldest and largest organisation of police executives, offering access to 30,000 US police departments and attracting over 17,000 leaders in law enforcement, is the one annual opportunity for businesses to demonstrate first-hand their cutting-edge products and services to US law enforcement authorities,” Mr Sullivan said.
“The Austrade pavilion at IACP provides unique opportunities for six Australian leading companies – Tieline Convert Solutions, MethShield, Point Duty Cyber Crime System, Land Warfare Acoustic Systems Inc, Blue Print Operational Planning System and Appen – obtaining vital exposure in the law enforcement community and access to a global market only available at IACP.
“Following the introduction of the Australia-US Free Trade Agreement (AUSFTA), Austrade established a dedicated USA Selling to Government Team and has assisted over 35 companies close over US$100 million of export sales in the federal, state, and local markets,” Mr Sullivan said. In addition to IACP, the USA Selling to Government Team – in conjunction with NSW Department of State and Regional Development (NSW DSRD) – also conducted a highly successful security trade mission in September with eight leading NSW security companies. The members met with US Federal Government agencies in Washington DC and also participated at the world’s largest security exhibition in Las Vegas – ASIS International 2007.
“Austrade’s Australia pavilion was the only country pavilion represented at ASIS and resulted in all six participating exhibitors reporting strong interest and developed business leads with US government agencies or companies,” Mr Sullivan said.
“Nuix, developers of an email and data forensic analysis tool used by many Australian federal agencies, finalised a transaction with a large US federal agency and its software is now being trialled extensively by Washington-based organisations as a direct result of Austrade facilitated introductions.
“Similarly, Lockit – which manufactures products that protect high value physical assets – has started negotiating with one of America’s largest banks and has delivered a sample product to a US federal agency.
“While DigiSensory Technologies, which provides video surveillance solutions, is in discussions with a large camera manufacturer about integrating its core technology into their range of products and will also return to the USA in the ensuing months to trial its products with a police department,” he said.
Mr Sullivan said while many Australian companies have developed ground-breaking technologies, the key to entering the highly competitive US market was to have an on-the-ground presence to enhance networking opportunities with key contacts and demonstrate the technologies personally.
