Austrade media release3 June 2009
Following on from the highly successful US program, the first G’day UK launches in London later this month (24-30 June) with a heavy-weight burst of activity to reinforce business and consumer partnerships between the two nations. Trade Minister, Simon Crean said that G’day UK is a fantastic opportunity for Australian and UK businesses to come together.
“Events such as the CEO Forum will provide a great chance to discuss new opportunities as we look towards the global recovery.” Mr Crean said.
Austrade’s Senior Trade Commissioner for the UK, Kylie Hargreaves, said the program included a series of events covering four main areas: trade & investment, food & wine, migration and tourism.
“G’day UK forms part of a broader strategy by Australia to continue to develop key relations with some of the world’s most powerful economies and to demonstrate Australia’s strengths as a dynamic and world-class player on the international stage,” Ms Hargreaves said.
G’day UK will celebrate uniquely Australian products, people, places, businesses, skills and attitude and will encourage the Brits to find a new appreciation of what Australia has to offer. A stellar cast of well-known Australians will showcase Australia as a modern, energetic and desirable business and leisure destination.
“I think there is a well known affinity between the Brits and the Aussies but when you ask about what Australia means to the average person in the street, you are most likely to get the 4 ‘s’s in response; sun, sea, surf and sports!
“What we want to use platforms like G’Day Uk to do is pull some of that attention not only to the ‘s’s but also our strong business credentials. Of Australia’s Global 100, more companies have a presence in London than any other city or urban area in the world. We need to harness the collective power of that sophisticated business brand and use it to communicate our capabilities across a host of sectors.
G’dayUK 2009 is supported by the NSW, QLD, Victorian, South and Western Australian State Governments, Austrade, Qantas and Tourism Australia in conjunction with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Wine Australia, Australian Business and key private sector sponsors.
