Australian export case study

New South Wales-based Trantek Pty Ltd has been chosen to supply all of the on-board information display and voice systems for the Dubai Light Rail system.

The US$3.89 billion Dubai Light Rail network – also known as the Dubai Metro – will span the business district of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates.

trantek_main.jpgAdditional public transport is needed in Dubai because the population has ballooned 25 per cent during the past five years to 1.3 million and is expected to reach 1.6 million by 2010, if current growth rates continue.

The Dubai Light Rail is being built from the ground up.

Driverless and fully automatic, it will also be the most advanced rail system anywhere in the world.

Due to open in September 2009, the network will have 70 kilometres of track with 43 stations – 33 above ground and ten underground – and will cater for up to 50,000 passengers per hour.

Information displays

Under a deal with Alcatel, the Milan-based conglomerate heading the Dubai Light Rail project, Trantek will supply all of the passenger announcement systems and LED graphic passenger information displays for the network.

A small privately-owned engineering company, Trantek provides engineering design and integration services, including a number of unique products for the transport infrastructure industry.

The company specializes in network video monitoring systems, digital (networked) public address systems, and passenger information systems, as well as network video control, smart digital in-vehicle public address systems, and integrated emergency call devices.

A big win

"The Dubai Light Rail contract was a big win for us," said Trantek’s CEO Lionel Ascone.

"Alcatel Australia was already a consulting client and uses our services in Australia, but we had strong competition from around the world for this project."

Mr Ascone said that their export adviser Colin Fulton and the Australian Rail Industry Corporation, headed by Ian Robb, had advised Trantek on the international rail industry and selling internationally.

"Our focus had been more on engineering, and more within Australia," said Mr Ascone.

"Austrade helped us to shape our ideas on what we had to do to be able to export successfully, and how to go about this.

"The advice was invaluable."
