Business Club Australia (BCA) was Austrade’s key business program of the Federal Government’s ‘Australia Open for Business’ campaign for the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.
Endorsed by the Sydney Organising Committee for the Olympic Games (SOCOG) and Sydney Paralympic Organising Committee (SPOC), the aim of BCA was to capitalise on Sydney hosting the 2000 Games and the estimated 20,000 visiting business people at Games time to make new business connections for Australian exporters.
During the Olympic and Paralympic Games BCA offered a state-of- the-art business centre (known as the Club centre) and a special business events program to facilitate face-to-face connections. It was located at Darling Harbour Wharf Seven and included a 98 metre catamaran from the Tasmanian company Incat moored alongside.
Key components of BCA included:
- 97 events held by during the Olympic & Paralympic Games period
- The club was used for high level meetings by over 400 VIP’s and politicians during the Games
- 16,182 visitors to the Club centre at Wharf 7 during the Games (27 percent from overseas) with a further 845 visitors during the Paralympic Games
- A virtual (on-line) club housing the BCA member database allowing for online business matching and use a range of on-line business services
- Austrade also brought 50 VIP business visitors to Australia prior to, and during the Olympics to network under the Trade Visitors Australia (TVA) program.
The Federal Government’s ‘Australia Open for Business’ campaign generated over $1.2bn worth of export & investment opportunities during the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.
In 2005, five years after the completion of the Sydney Olympics, the on-going success of the BCA program around other sporting events was officially recognised by the Australian Marketing Institute who awarded Austrade the Australian Award for Innovation in Marketing Excellence.
