Australian export case study

PTW_main.jpgPTW Architects is one of several Australian businesses to leverage their success and expertise from the 2000 Sydney Olympics by winning further contracts, ahead of the 2004 and 2008 Olympics in Athens and Beijing.

For Beijing 2008, PTW designed the main Olympic Village in a project worth around $400 million and co-designed the award-winning “Watercube” National Swimming Centre, which “combines the symbolism of the square in Chinese culture and the natural structure of soap bubbles, translated into architectural form.”

Managing Director John Bilmon has played a pivotal role in PTW’s expansion into Asia.

The firm now has offices in Shanghai, Beijing, Hangzhou , Hanoi,  Ho Chi Minh City and Auckland as well as working extensively in the Middle East.

Mr Bilmon said PTW also has a long and positive association with Business Club Australia – a program created by Austrade to foster international business opportunities around major sporting events.

“The networking opportunities Business Club Australia offers are excellent, attracting an appropriate mix of people representing diverse business interests – both local and international,” Mr Bilmon said.

Launched in 2000 for the Sydney Olympics, the Club has run successful programs for Rugby World Cup 2003 and more recently, the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games, which has already generated ten export deals worth $6.8 million.

All up BCA has held over 260 networking events in Australia and overseas; there are 8,500 members (37 per cent from overseas); and the program has facilitated more than $1.7 billion in business deals.

Manager Ashley White said this year BCA will run its first Club program based around an overseas sporting event: Rugby World Cup 2007, France in September-October, just head of the Melbourne Cup Carnival in November and another offshore program for Beijing 2008.
