As the Australian Government’s official business program at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi, Business Club Australia (BCA) provided a platform to strengthen trade and investment with India–one of Australia’s fastest growing major trading partners.

47 Australian companies worked with India to stage the Games, delivering on contracts worth over AUD$83 million. BCA India 2010 provided Australian firms opportunity to further build and enhance business connections against the backdrop of this major sporting event. Along with noteworthy business outcomes, the program helped Australian businesses capitalise on the strength and vibrancy of Brand Australia, which was rolled out for the first time in India.

Program highlights

High-level business and government participation

BCA India 2010 delivered high value in bilateral business engagement in what was a negative international media environment. Eighteen Australian and Indian firms were official partners of the BCA India 2010 program.

Senior representatives from internationally recognised firms like the Adani Group, ANZ Bank, BHP Billiton, Birla Technical Services, Gujarat NRE, KPMG, Leighton Contractors (India), Macquarie Securities, Mahindra Satyam, Mahindra Aviation, Sinclair Knight Merz Consulting, SMEC and Tata Steel were among attendees.

Australian Minister for Sport, Senator the Hon. Mark Arbib, the Australian High Commissioner to India, Mr Peter Varghese AO, the Premier of Queensland, The Hon Anna Bligh MP, the Governor of Victoria, Professor David de Krester AC represented Australian Government interests at BCA India 2010, and the Indian Minister of Road Transport and Highways, The Hon Kamal Nath MP, attended the book launch of Australia India: A Growing Partnership, produced by Stroudgate Pty Limited.

Ambassadors

Australian Olympic gold medallist (swimming), Mr Kieren Perkins OAM and Australian Commonwealth Games gold medallist (gymnastics) Mr Brennon Dowrick were official Ambassadors for the BCA India 2010 program.

Event program

BCA India 2010 showcased Australian expertise and innovation in sustainable building and construction, clean energy, education, food and beverage, financial services, mining, sports and major events, as well as two-way investment.

Some high-profile events included:

  • Exclusive media conference targeting Australian and Indian media for the launch of BCA India 2010.
  • A 200-strong dinner reception hosting CEOs and senior business executives from Australia and India showcasing opportunities for two-way investment.
  • A prestigious Awards night recognising the outstanding contributions of Indian alumni of the Australian education system.
  • Launch of the Australian Financial Services Benchmark Report targeting the financial services industry in India.
  • A luncheon seminar showcasing Australian business success at the Delhi Games and highlighting business opportunities around the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland. The event involved key members of the Glasgow 2014 Organising Committee, including the CEO, Mr John Scott.
  • An evening of music and festivities celebrating cultural collaborations between India and Australia, launching Parramasala: Australian Festival of South Asian Arts in India.

All events were held exclusively at the Australian High Commission in New Delhi, except the launch of the Australian Financial Services Benchmark Report, which was held in India’s financial capital, Mumbai.
