Trends and opportunities
The market
Like many other governments, Taiwan’s government has set new feed-in-tariffs and subsidy programs for the industry as follows:
The Renewable Energy Target is aiming to reach 15 per cent of installed capacity by 2025.
Currently, it will reach 3,355MW this year, including:
- 1,975MW from hydro
- 529.3MW from wind power
- 41.4MW from photovoltaics
- 809.4MW from biomass
The second phase is to reach 8,450MW in 2025, including:
- 2,500MW from hydro
- 2,450MW from wind power
- 2,000MW from photovoltaics
- 1,400MW from biomass
- 150MW from geothermal
- 200MW from fuel cell
- 200MW from ocean
Other renewable energy targets are:
- Biodiesel 1,200,000 KL (B2 in all stations) by 2025
- Bioethanol 2,000,000 KL (E3 in most stations) by 2025
- Solar thermal water heater 4.09 million square metres by 2025
Opportunities
- Hydro – opportunity is limited, due to the current technology is very mutual.
- Wind – it is targeting offshore to reach 600 MW by 2020 and 3,600 MW by 2030. Opportunities exist for Australian wind energy developers to establish offshore wind farm in Taiwan.
- Photovoltaics – joint R&D for higher efficiency and the next generation technology. In addition, given the strong foundation of the semiconductor industry in Taiwan, it is the main PV producer in the world. There are a number of Taiwan companies keen to find JV partners in Australia to develop solar projects.
- Biofuel – exports and joint R&D on the second and third generation technology
- Geothermal – there are 26 hot spring sites estimated the geothermal energy are between 9MW to 500MW to be developed via conventional geothermal energy method. Additional EGS, there are eight sites with 31GW geothermal energy to be developed in total. Opportunities exist for Australian geothermal energy developers to establish geothermal energy generation in Taiwan.
- Ocean – there are some studies indicate there are abundant current resources in Taiwan. According the estimation of National Taiwan University, there is above 60 GW resources can be developed from Kuroshio Current. Opportunity for Australian ocean energy developers to establish current generation in Taiwan.
- Carbon capture and storage – joint R&D
- LED – there are number of LED lighting producers in Taiwan interested in finding JV partners in Australia
- Electrical vehicle – joint R&D
