Australian corporate education profiled at Chief Learning Officers Summit 2013 in Mumbai
03 Oct 2013
As part of an initiative to raise the profile of Australian corporate education and training and to identify corporate training opportunities in India, Austrade participated in the Chief Learning Officers (CLO) Summit 2013 in Mumbai. The summit, now in its fifth year, attracted training and learning development managers from over 200 organisations.
Representatives from Australia’s education and training industry and from Austrade’s leadership team participated in the summit. Austrade partnered with the organisers, with Australia recognised as ‘country partner’.
Australian training organisations that participated and spoke at the conference, including the Institute of Project Management and the Australian Institute of Management (WA), illustrated the quality of training in Australia.
A keynote presentation was delivered by IITB-Monash Research Academy on the role of innovation in business and how Australia innovates. A discussion with, and impromptu performance by, an Australian alumnus, who is a rising music director in India, looked at how an Australian education allowed both creative and technical competence to excel.
Ms Nicola Watkinson and Mr Grame Barty spoke at key sessions, highlighting:
- expertise that Australia can bring to training in India
- the adaptable approach of Australian education
- the quality of Australia’s industry-linked training.
Participation in the summit facilitated contact between Austrade and heads of training at organisations which have a focus on upskilling. Austrade also assisted the Institute of Project management with an extended business program aligned to the event.
Following the summit, Austrade is continuing discussions with identified companies to develop them as training opportunities for Australian providers.
Analysis
Participation at key industry events such as the CLO Summit is useful for profiling Australian education and training capability to a larger group of relevant companies. Insights gathered at the summit indicate that there is high pressure on learning and development managers to link training to productivity. Hence, training managers are seeking highly relevant corporate education curricula for their organisations. Management training aligned to industry sectors is more preferred than general management education.
Feedback from corporate India suggested that fora such as the CLO Summit are important brand-building platforms. Participation at the summit supported Austrade and Australian training providers to identify organisations that have a focus on employee training and to connect with relevant contacts within those organisations.
