Education outreach in Philippines shows strong developing market
23 Jul 2012
Cebu City, a major commercial centre south of Manila, remains a strong developing market for education. Aside from student recruitment, universities and institutions in Cebu are possible partners for Australian education providers.
During Cebu Business Month in June, Austrade conducted the ‘Australia in Cebu’ business mission. Australian education was one of the priority sectors promoted through Future Unlimited activities. A total of 60 potential students, parents and working professionals attended a seminar for potential students, conducted by Austrade and the Department of Immigration and Citizenship. The audience expressed interest in a diverse range of fields, with questions about programs in business, health, sciences and engineering.
The mission also included an education roundtable with NOOSR 1 and 2 institutions and international and upper tier high schools. The feedback from the roundtable indicated interest in student and faculty exchanges, research collaboration and articulation in technical and academic fields.
Cebu City is the capital of the Visayas Region and is a vibrant economic area. Located one hour by plane south of Manila, Cebu is a robust export and commercial centre. For education, Cebu is a developing market for student recruitment. Education exhibitions and missions have been conducted in the city, considered a major secondary hub. The region has been receiving attention from international education destinations, to which IDP Education has responded by establishing an office in Cebu. There are several international schools and NOOSR 1 and 2 institutions in the city.
