World champion Scholaroos promote Australian schooling

07 Aug 2012

The Scholaroos team representing the Australian International School in Malaysia (AISM) achieved their best ever results at the global round of the World Scholar’s Cup, held in Bangkok recently.  The win profiled the benefits and quality of the Australian school sector in Malaysia.

AISM is the only international school in Malaysia offering an Australian-based curriculum (NSW) from preparation to year 12.  The school was established in 2000 and is a member of the Taylor’s Education Group.

AISM demonstrated the strengths of the Australian school sector by their outstanding performance at the World Scholar’s Cup. The global academic competition brought the best and brightest students from the globe to a tournament in Bangkok, Thailand, featuring four competitions: debating, essay writing, multiple choice test and team quiz. The competition involved more than 1000 competitors from 100 schools located in 20 countries.

The Scholaroos team from AISM was represented by 36 students made up of Malaysian, Australian, British, South African, Maldivian, Singaporean and Papua New Guinean scholars.

The AISM Scholaroos shone across all competitions, which qualified them to participate in the World Scholar’s Cup Tournament of Champions at Yale University.  AISM achievement received good media coverage in the local media and raised the profile of Australian schools in Malaysia and the region. As AISM is the only school in Malaysia modelled on the Australian curriculum, Austrade sponsored the event.

Analysis

As Malaysia strives to become an international education hub, transnational providers such as the AISM, provide an avenue for students in the region to access Australian education at the school level and a pathway to tertiary education. According to AISM, approximately 57 per cent of AISM students, of which the majority are non-Australians, would pursue an Australian tertiary education.
