Austrade promotes Australian education capabilities in delivering qualifications and training in offshore transnational programs and partnerships.
Australia has been highly successful in delivering programs offshore – in 2011 there were more than 80,000 students enrolled offshore in higher education programs and more than 65,000 enrolled in vocational education and training (VET) programs.
ASEAN Workforce Skills Development Market Initiative
In 2012, Austrade developed a market initiative to focus on identifying increased opportunities for Australian education and training providers to deliver transnational education and training to the ASEAN region. The initiative is focused on aligning Australian skills training capabilities with particular industry needs in key countries, including Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Philippines and Singapore. In 2013, Austrade undertook research on the demand for skills in targeted industries across the major markets in ASEAN, with research made available through the Market Information Package (MIP).
Successful Vocational Education and Training in India
India appears to hold significant promise, worth about A$1.8 billion and estimated to be growing at 25 per cent per annum. However, many foreign vocational education and training (VET) initiatives in India have not been successful. Austrade has conducted research exploring the challenges and risks involved in engaging locally in India’s VET market. The Unlocking India’s Potential: Commercially successful vocational education and training research paper by Austrade and Sannam S4 includes discussion on ways to structure a business model to overcome challenges and risks, and features three successful models of VET delivery as case studies.
