Transnational education
Austrade promotes Australian education capabilities in delivering qualifications and training in offshore transnational programs and partnerships.
Australia has been highly successful in delivering programs offshore – in 2011 there were more than 80,000 students enrolled offshore in higher education programs and more than 65,000 enrolled in vocational education and training (VET) programs.
Australia in the Asian Century White Paper
Many countries are facing growing skills shortages, particularly across Asia, and Australia is in a unique position to provide skills and training solutions to meet this need. The Australia in the Asian Century white paper recognises the importance of Australia’s role in transnational education and aims to grow Australia’s engagement with the region through the offshore delivery of education programs.
The white paper emphasises the role of vocational education and training through national objective number 13: ‘Australia’s vocational, education and training (VET) institutions will have substantially expanded services in more nations in the region, building the productive capacity of the workforce of these nations and supporting Australian businesses and workers to have a greater presence in Asian markets.’
ASEAN Workforce Skills Development Market Initiative
In 2012, Austrade developed a market initiative to focus on identifying increased opportunities for Australian education and training providers to deliver transnational education and training to the ASEAN region. The initiative is focused on aligning Australian skills training capabilities with particular industry needs in key countries, including Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Philippines and Singapore. In 2013, Austrade is undertaking research on the demand for skills in targeted industries across the major markets in ASEAN, with research to be made available through the Market Information Package (MIP) during the year.
