Australian aviation experts advise in Canadian airport planning

Australian export case study

Airbiz Aviation Strategies, the Australian aviation and airports consultancy, is providing expertise for major airport and aviation developments around the world.

The Melbourne-based company has completed consultancy projects in over forty countries on five continents, and now earns more than half its income from international work.

Airbiz’ expertise and services covers the gamut from strategic planning in airport master plans to feasibility studies and terminal and airfield simulations.

The company’s airport management work includes testing for operational readiness and terminal design, including spatial analysis and airport retail analysis and planning.

Airbiz also advises on aircraft noise, traffic forecasting, aviation policy, airport systems, financial modelling, expert evidence and due diligence.

First overseas office

The first office for Airbiz outside Australia and New Zealand was in Canada. This market continues to be very successful for the company, which now has offices in Vancouver, Calgary and Montreal.

“We were not only pleased but also a little surprised at our success initially, because there are so many established players out there,” said Airbiz Managing Director, Greg Fordham.

Mr Fordham said that Airbiz is playing a key role in the new C$3 billion Calgary International Airport (YYC), Canada’s third busiest. The company is the specialist aviation planning and simulation consultant for the runway modelling and environmental assessment for Calgary’s C$500 million new parallel runway.

“Canadian airport infrastructure continues to develop, upgrade and expand to meet the ongoing growth and changes in the aviation industry,” Mr Fordham said.

“Our recent work has extended from coast to coast within Canada.”

Austrade has helped

The Australian Trade Commission – has helped Airbiz on their export journey.

“When we first took a serious look at the Canadian market, we realised that to capitalise on the opportunities we needed to establish a presence in the market,” Mr Fordham said.

“Coincidently, around that time I attended an Austrade seminar in Melbourne on establishing a presence in Canada. This resulted in working with Austrade Vancouver in establishing our first office in Vancouver.

“Since then, Austrade has continued to help us in Canada through market introductions and participation in networking events such as the Business Club Australia reception during the Winter Olympics.”

Kevin Lamb, Austrade’s Post Manager in Vancouver, said that Airbiz not only identified the opportunities in Canada for their services but, more importantly, recognised the need to have a presence in market.

“Airbiz’s investment in Canada has demonstrated their commitment to the market.  It has contributed to their success to date and positioned them to continue to do well in Canada as well as the US,” Mr Lamb said.
