Auckland Housing Accord
The Minister for Housing the Hon Dr Nick Smith and his Worship the Mayor, Len Brown have agreed today, through a special Accord, to urgently increase the supply and affordability of housing in Auckland.
Key aspects of the proposal include:
- The introduction of special legislation as part of Budget 2013 that will enable special housing areas to be created by the Auckland Council.
- New measures and targets have been articulated that can provide much needed pace to addressing housing issues. These measures are 9,000 additional residential houses in Year 1, 13,000 in Year 2 and 17,000 in Year 3.
- The Accord will provide an interim solution before the unitary plan becomes fully operational in 3 years.
- Qualifying developments will be streamlined as long as they are consistent with Auckland’s Unitary Plan.
