Austrade media release

10 January, 2006

Award winning hair expert and photographer Jamie Carroll is a busy man.

Between styling Hollywood and the fashion elite, doing runway shows in the US and running his eponymous hair and beauty salon in Sydney, Mr Carroll doesn’t have much spare time.

Mr Carroll is the owner of Jamie Carroll Hair and Beauty in Sydney and is renowned for being one of the world’s leading hair dressing teachers.

He has styled the likes of former Miss Universe Jennifer Hawkins and Layne Beachley, and fashion shows for Leona Edmiston and the upcoming Designer Showcase at G’Day LA: Australia Week 2006.

Throughout G’Day LA: Australia Week 2006, Jamie will be showcasing his many talents and skills in designing hair and will be working backstage at the exclusive Australian Designer Showcase.

Jamie has also partnered with the internationally renowned Yamaguchi Salon at Spa Mystique and Ergo Styling tools to deliver hair and make-up styling to the stars during the January award season.

With so much on his plate, it is amazing Carroll has also found time to commercialise his business smarts, not just his styling smarts. Instead of trying to do it all, time-poor Carroll decided to replicate himself, so to speak, with Envision Academy, a hairdressing training DVD being seen in more than 25 countries and in eight languages.

Envision Academy is a series of step-by-step educational, professional training modules, which can be viewed by individual salon staff or used by salon educators, and are designed around current and future fashion trends.

But it wasn’t as easy as shipping off a DVD and hoping for interest from salons in the US. Before entering the US market, Mr Carroll consulted with Austrade in the US and got some valuable advice on protecting his intellectual property.

“Due to the highly competitive nature of the US marketplace, Austrade advised that I seek to protect my intellectual property through trademark and copyright protection Envision Academy,” Mr Carroll said.

The Australia-US Free Trade Agreement (AUSFTA) increases intellectual property protection for Australians in the US. For example, copyright protection of sound and film recordings has been extended by 20 years, enhancing the potential for artists like Envision Academy to continue to generate income from their creative works.

Austrade Senior Trade Commissioner based in Los Angeles, Kylie Hargreaves said, “Mr Carroll’s options for generating long term revenues in the US market have increased, especially after the implementation of the AUSFTA.”

“The regulatory framework between the two countries and new enhanced legal protection provides Australian service providers with greater comfort and potential access to the US market.

“For Jamie, it means some very tangible benefits are realised, including the extension of his copyright benefits by several more years and the duty free treatment of most of his training materials such as his DVDs,” Ms Hargreaves said.

Mr Carroll agrees, commenting, “The AUSFTA makes it easier for us to do business in the US; Australian products and services are now more recognised in the world’s most competitive marketplace.

I truly feel that if I am successful in this market, I can make it anywhere!”

In the future, Mr Carroll sees the US as a prime market to begin franchising and licensing his DVDs.

Mr Carroll also advises new exporters to protect their intellectual property, “Trade mark your creations, visit the market regularly, be patient, have a really good knowledge of your industry leaders, and don’t underestimate the trade media as a way to get the word out on your product or service.”

Austrade now provides expanded on-the-ground support for Australian exporters in the US market with unprecedented reach in 18 US cities and a dedicated network of USA Export Advisers around Australia.
