Bernd has a Bachelor of Economics from Monash University in Melbourne, Australia and is a Chartered Accountant having worked with KPMG in Melbourne and London. Bernd is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Bernd worked for the British Investment Bank - Robert Fleming (now owned by Chase Manhattan) in the corporate finance department from 1989 to 1993. During this period Bernd was seconded to the German Government to lead the privatisation of a portfolio of East German companies.

Bernd joined Austrade in Frankfurt in 1995 as Investment Commissioner for Central and Northern Europe and then Executive General Manager of the International Division of Invest Australia, based in Sydney.

Bernd was CEO of the Office of Economic Development (OED) for Brisbane from 2003 to 2005. Now part of Brisbane Marketing, the OED is an alliance between the public and private sectors charged with the attraction of new investment to Brisbane.

Bernd joined the Roads & Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai in early 2009 as Director of the Commercial Development Department responsible for implementing revenue raising strategies by leveraging the physical and intellectual assets of the RTA.

Bernd has joined the Australian Trade Commission as Senior Investment Director for the Middle East and North Africa region responsible for attracting productive, direct investment into Australia.
