Australian universities get funding boost to train next generation of researchers 22 January 2010 Forty-one universities around Australia will share in a $1.42 billion Australian Government grant to boost higher education research and research training during 2010. The funding has just been announced by the Australian Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research, Senator Kim Carr. Senator Carr said that more than half of the grant will go towards training the next generation of Australian researchers needed to answer the challenges and build the industries of tomorrow. Of the funding, $610 million is earmarked to assist students completing PhD and Masters degrees by research; $164 million will be used to support exceptional research students; and $20 million is designed to attract the brightest research students from overseas.
