Investment Funds Surge to A$1.4 Trillion

Australian investment funds continued to grow sharply in 2007, surging by A$169 billion to A$1.4 trillion. This annual increase is substantial, representing an amount equivalent to the whole of Singapore's economy (measured by GDP) and around three quarters of Hong Kong’s economy. The impressive growth of the Australian fund assets continues to be primarily driven by the government-mandated retirement income scheme and the favourable tax treatment of superannuation(1). The large and rapidly growing pool of assets continues to draw global financial services firms to establish or expand operations in Australia.
