Government boosts clinical trials in Australia30 October 2009The Australian Government has announced the creation of an Action Group to boost Australia as a preferred destination for clinical trials. Phase I–IV trials are worth $450 million each year to Australia and the flow-on investment from clinical trials is a significant contributor to Australia’s R&D. The announcement of this initiative was made jointly by the Minister for Health and Ageing, Nicola Roxon, and the Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research, Senator Kim Carr. The Action Group will include representatives from the pharmaceuticals industry. It has been asked to ensure that Australia has a coordinated, nationwide approach to clinical trials and performance measures. A report is to be made to the Government by the end of the first quarter next year.
