Australia slashes red tape on excise tax 10 December 2009 In a move which slashes red tape on excise tax and will reduce compliance costs for business, the Australian Government has announced that the Australian Taxation Office will now have sole responsibility for the administration of all excise-equivalent goods. Previously, the administration of these goods – including imported petroleum, tobacco and alcohol products – was the responsibility of Australian Customs. In announcing the change, the Assistant Treasurer, Senator Nick Sherry, said that a single administrator would deliver significant efficiencies through a more streamlined process. “These revised administrative arrangements reflect the outcomes of extensive industry consultation,” Senator Sherry said. “We have listened to the concerns of business.” The new arrangements will be phased in beginning 1 January 2010.
