Australian Alternative Investments Report published 30 March 2010 The Australian Trade Commission (Austrade) has just published a report on the Australian Alternative Investments industry. ‘Alternatives’ is an umbrella term which covers asset classes other than the areas of Traditional Fixed Income and Equities. Australia’s expanding Alternative Investment industry is now worth A$240 billion. The main areas are: - The A$58 billion Hedge Funds sector – the largest in Asia Pacific.
- The A$78 billion Australian Real Estate Investment Trust sector – the largest in the world outside of the United States.
- The A$25 billion Private Equity and Venture Capital sector, which received the region’s fourth largest inflows in 2008.
- The A$60 billion plus Infrastructure Funds industry – one of the largest in the world.
- The A$20 billion Agribusiness Investment sector.
The substantial size of the Australian Alternative Investment industry is supported by: - The A$1.2 trillion Pension Funds industry – the largest in Asia, ex-Japan.
- Sophisticated High Net Worth Individual investors - the third largest in Asia – and a unique 410,000 plus strong investment community of Self Managed Superannuation Funds that account for one third of the Australia’s Pension Fund market.
- The A$1.7 trillion Investment Management industry – the region’s largest – from which the Alternative Investment industry can access a deep talent pool of investment managers, product manufacturers, distributors, and service providers.
- Australia’s large domestic GDP – the fourth largest in Asia - which has helped build Australia’s Financial, Capital and Commodity Markets into some of the region’s largest and which, in turn, offers a broad range of investment opportunities for the Alternatives sector.
