Australia funds innovators

12 May 2010

The Australian Government has announced grants totalling $3.4 million to help bring a number of innovative Australian projects to market.

Senator Kim Carr, the Australian Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research, has announced the funding under the Government’s Commercialising Emerging Technologies (COMET) program.

The forty-eight innovative Australian products which will receive ‘to market’ support under this program include an artificial heart, a novel grey water treatment process, a world first diesel-powered helicopter system, and a new ‘Smartbrake’ for cars.

  • BiVacor is commercialising a device which can take over the work of a failing hear for up to ten years.
  • Aerofloat (Australia) has developed grey water treatment using dissolved air floatation which allows the discharge or re-use of high-quality water.
  • Delta Development is marketing a lightweight, diesel-powered, two-seater utility helicopter specifically designed for remote conditions.
  • Extron Design Services has developed an advanced electronic control system – a ‘Smartbrake – that will automatically activate a vehicle’s park brake in the event that a driver forgets to apply the brake before leaving a vehicle.
