Australian-German partnership in biomedical research

15 September 2010

Australia’s Monash University and the German conglomerate Siemens have signed an agreement to establish a biomedical imaging research centre at the University’s Clayton campus in Melbourne.

The centre will have technological capabilities to support a wide range of engineering and scientific research. It will be fitted out with a suite of Siemens imaging products, including computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and positron emission tomography (PET) scanning.

The University’s Pro Vice Chancellor for Research and Research platforms, Professor Ian Smith said, “The partnership with Siemens will ensure absolutely state-of-the-art capabilities to support the excellent and innovative research taking place within the Clayton precinct.”

Albert Goller, CEO of Siemens Pacific Cluster, said he views the partnership between Siemens and Monash University as a further step forward in positioning Australia as a world-leader in biomedical research.

“This centre could potentially revolutionize the future of healthcare.” Mr Goller said.

Monash University will be the first organisation in Australia to receive MAGNETOM Skyra 3Tesla MRI imaging equipment, which will be operational by early 2011.

Monash University ranks in the top twenty-five universities globally in ‘life sciences and biomedicine’.

Established 160 years ago and with headquarters in Munich, Germany, Siemens is a global leader in healthcare, energy and industrial products.
