Western Australia solar farm investment 5 October 2010 Perth-based Verve Energy and BP Solar, one of the world’s largest solar companies, have announced plans to build Australia’s largest ever grid-connected solar photovoltaic (PV) plant near Geraldton, Western Australia. The A$58 million, 10 megawatt (MW) Greenough River Solar Farm will produce 28 GWh of electricity per annum and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 25,000 tonnes per year (the equivalent of taking 5,000 cars off the road). Work will begin in early 2011 and is scheduled to be completed by late in the year. The solar photovoltaic (PV) farm will produce energy during the day, when it is needed most. For this project, BP Solar plans to use the latest technology to construct 40,000 PV panels mounted on some 4,300 structures called tables, which will follow the sun’s movement from east to west throughout the day to ensure maximum energy production.
