US print-on-demand distributor to expand into Australia

11 October 2010

The Nashville, Tennessee-based book distributor, the Ingram Content Group, has announced that it will establish a print-on-demand book facility in Australia.

The facility will be a full-scale manufacturing operation under its Lightning Source brand, producing both paperback and hardcover books.

Operations are expected to begin in June 2011.

CEO David Pritchard said, “This expansion of Ingram’s global presence, from the United Kingdom to France and now Australia, provides publishers with expanded market reach and sales opportunities.”

Mr Pritchard pointed out a print-on-demand book manufacturing facility can help publishers reduce the need to warehouse inventory, as well as reduce transportation costs and potential stock write-offs.

Publishers can also take advantage of a virtual inventory model through print-on-demand to dramatically increase the number of titles on hand.

The Ingram Content Group provides a broad range of physical and digital services to the book industry and distributes trade books, e-books interactive textbooks, audio, magazines and other book-related products to booksellers and libraries in the US and internationally.

Lightning Source, with a digital library of over 4.4 million books, has printed and delivered over 99 million books on behalf of publishers around the world.
