IBM to build global R&D lab in Australia

18 October 2010

The US computer and technology conglomerate IBM has announced plans to build a global R&D laboratory in Australia.

The announcement was made by the Prime Minister of Australia, Julia Gillard, and the Premier of Victoria, John Brumby.

“The IBM laboratory will be located at the University of Melbourne where researchers can work side-by-side to help tackle international issues such as managing natural disasters, using our natural resources efficiently, fighting diseases, boosting agricultural yields and harnessing the power of biotechnology,” said the Prime Minister.

IBM Australia’s Managing Director, Glen Boreham, said that IBM had been “drawn to Australia by the availability of world-class talent, the innovation environment, continent-scale opportunities and Australia's robust economy.”

“IBM’s selection of Australia for their new Global R&D Laboratory is a vote of confidence in our national innovation system and a major boost for ICT research in Australia,” noted Australia’s Innovation Minister, Senator Kim Carr.

Created with the support of the Australian and Victorian State Governments, this facility will be the first of its kind anywhere in the world for IBM. The laboratory will combine the resources of IBM and the University of Melbourne and work closely with leading Australian scientists and engineers from academia, government and commercial entities.

The new lab is expected to begin operations during the first quarter of next year.
