Australian, German MOU on Carbon Capture 25 October 2010 The Australian energy company, Linc Energy, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Potsdam-based GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ). The organisations will develop carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology for Underground Coal Gasification (UCG) operations. “Under the terms of the agreement, GFZ will work on combined UCG and CCS,” Linc Energy’s CEO Peter Bond said. He added that combined UCG and CCS technologies will make Linc Energy’s UCG process carbon neutral. “With a potential efficiency of 400 times that of other CCS methods when storing CO² in UCG cavities, UCG operations could end up providing the CO² sinks required in many parts of the world whilst also producing cleaner energy,” Mr Bond said. The ASX-listed, Brisbane-based Linc Energy is working on commercially producing high quality synthetic liquid fuels using syngas produced from UCG. UCG offers the potential to use the energy stored in coal deposits that are uneconomical to mine using conventional methods. More information |
