Construction begins on Australia’s first Translational Research Institute 3 December 2010 Construction has begun on Australia’s first Translational Research Institute (TRI): a facility dedicated to translating scientific discoveries into applications for medical practice. Located in Brisbane, the $354 million Institute will be the only one of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere and only one of a few of its size in the world. The Translational Research Institute is a collaboration between The University of Queensland, Queensland University of Technology (QUT), Princess Alexandra Hospital and the Mater Medical Research Institute. Working in cross-disciplinary teams, researchers at the Institute will concentrate on cancer, diabetes, obesity and liver disease, in addition to inflammatory diseases, HIV, malaria, and bone and joint diseases. The internationally renowned Professor Ian Frazer, inventor of the HPV vaccine against cervical cancer, has been one of the key people behind the formation of the new Institute. “The people who will work here aspire to world leading research focused on translating scientific knowledge into practical benefits for the community,” Professor Frazer said. Brisbane’s Translational Research Institute is scheduled to open in October 2012. More information |
