UK data centre provider building large eco-friendly facility in Australia 13 December 2010 The UK data centre provider Global Switch has been given the green light to build a large new data centre in Australia. The $210 million, six-storey facility will be built next to the company’s existing 42,000 square meters’ facility in Ultimo, Sydney – already the largest data centre facility in the Southern Hemisphere. The new eco-friendly data centre – dubbed ‘Sydney2’ – will have an additional 34,000 square meters of new space. Work will commence in mid-2011 and be completed by the end of 2012. Global Switch Executive Chairman, John Corcoran, said the new facility will be one of the most energy efficient data centres ever to be built. “By using a tri-generation system we expect to achieve around a 45 per cent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions when compared to using conventional power from the electricity grid,” Mr Corcoran said. “This feature, together with the overall scale and size of the building, will result in the data centre being three to four times more efficient than multiple computer rooms built within other facilities." Established in 1998, Global Switch is the largest data centre provider outside the United States, with centres in Amsterdam, Frankfurt, London, Madrid, Paris and Singapore, as well as in Sydney.
