Australia and Germany collaborate on resource and energy initiatives
14 June 2011
The Australian and German governments recently signed a declaration that will enable the two countries to cooperate on investment and research and development (R & D). The work is expected to focus on clean energy, minerals and low-carbon technologies.
The declaration was signed during a recent visit to Australia by the German Foreign Minister. The two countries have also committed to trade and investment with third-world countries and cooperation in the fields of recycling, substitution, efficient manufacturing and the environmental impacts of mining activities.
Australia and Germany already have a strong trade relationship, valued at over A$12 billion, and conduct dialogue on non-proliferation and disarmament. The German economy is the fourth largest in the world.
In 2009-2010, Germany’s proposed investment in Australia’s mineral exploration and development sector was A$75 million.
Germany is regarded as a global leader in clean energy technologies, and Australia is highly regarded on the world stage for its mining technologies and services.
Austrade Europe has been active in facilitating this relationship, including the CSIRO investment mission to Germany, France and Spain and the showcasing of Australian clean energy capabilities at the Inter Solar conference in Munich.
