European transport innovator secures Australian contract
30 June 2011
German technology company, init innovation in traffic systems AG, has been awarded an A$5 million contract with the Brisbane local government.
The project will see init AG install their Intermodal Transport Control System (ITCS) with real-time passenger information and an automatic vehicle location system.
South-East Queensland’s Translink Transit Authority will oversee init AG’s installation of the technology, initially to 130 vehicles and potentially extending to 19 individual bus operators in the region. A start date has been set for early 2012.
The init group, founded in Germany in 1983, already has a subsidiary operation in Queensland.
The project is also part of a broader plan in the state to make transport more ecological, reducing carbon dioxide emissions and protecting the environment.
Init AG previously has supplied e-ticketing systems to Australian clients, including to Metro Tasmania in 2007. Austrade supported the company by providing market intelligence and assisting with their market entry strategy and establishment of operations in Australia.
Intelligent transport options are growing in stature. For example, Australia’s NICTA is conducting research into sustainable transport and logistics technology with the support of more than a dozen foreign and local stakeholders.
