Australia’s Cities Amongst the World’s Most Liveable
2 September 2011
Melbourne is the world’s most liveable city and three other Australian cities are among the world’s top ten best cities, according to the Economist Intelligence Unit.
Melbourne was followed by Vienna in second place and Vancouver in third out of a list of 140 cities.
Three other Australian capitals were rated in the top ten— Sydney was sixth, Perth eighth and Adelaide ninth.
The EIU’s annual Liveability survey is used by companies to determine if employees should be paid a premium to be located there based on a city’s liveability.
The Index judges a city’s liveability according to five criteria: stability, culture and environment, healthcare, education and infrastructure.
Mid-sized cities with low population densities rated well in the July survey.
“Those that score best tend to be mid-sized cities in wealthier countries with a relatively low population density,” the EIU said. “This can foster a range of recreational activities without leading to high crime levels or overburdened infrastructure.”
Australia’s enviable lifestyle is often cited by international companies as an advantage when deciding on new Asia Pacific locations.
