Australia is now home to the world’s fifth largest brain research facility with the opening of a A$225 million centre in Melbourne this month.
The Melbourne Brain Centre will host 700 researchers and clinical staff from the Florey Neuroscience Institutes, The Mental Health Research Institute, University of Melbourne, the Royal Melbourne Hospital and the Austin Hospital.
It is envisaged the new facility will foster close collaboration between world-class researchers and clinicians, and drive new initiatives in the treatment of brain disorders including stroke, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's Disease, Alzheimer's Disease, epilepsy and mental illness.
Victorian Premier Ted Baillieu said the Melbourne Brain Centre is expected to attract the world’s best and brightest scientific minds.
“This wonderful centre is one of the largest neuroscience facilities in the world and our strong contribution to medical research is on par with the best medical research expertise in the world.”
The new centre was jointly funded by Australia’s Federal Government (A$77 million), the Government of Victoria (A$53 million), and the Myer and Ian Potter Foundations.
