GE to open technology development centre in Western Australia

Multinational company GE is to open an $80 million technology and learning complex in Perth, WA, to develop highly skilled staff for rapid-growth industries in Australia. The centre will house GE’s headquarters in WA and workshops to service and commission products and technology.
Located on a 100,000 square-metre site at Jandakot Airport, it will focus on skills-training and technology development in the oil and gas, energy, mining, transportation and water industries. It will also act as an Australian hub for all of GE’s regional training.
The centre was jointly launched by GE's Global Chairman and CEO, Jeff Immelt and Australia’s Minister for Tertiary Education, Skills, Jobs and Workplace Relations, Senator the Hon Chris Evans.
Senator Evans said, “Through this initiative [Australia has] a very real opportunity to become known throughout the world for providing oil and gas expertise. This investment provides great potential to leverage shared skills and actively develop and advance the local workforce.”
GE Australia and New Zealand’s President and CEO, Steve Sargent said, “GE has been built on nurturing talent, investment in people and provision of top quality training.
“Working with the Australian Government to invest in a highly skilled labour force is going to create tremendous value for both the industries that are thriving here—and the local economy. It is about business aligning with Government plans to invest in the critical skills needed to support growth.”
Construction of the first stage of the complex is expected to be completed in September this year.
