Green telecommunications research centre opens in Australia

19 April 2011

The University of Melbourne, in partnership with global company Alcatel-Lucent Bell Labs and the Victorian Government, has launched one of the largest research efforts on green telecommunications in the world.

The Centre for Energy Efficient Telecommunications (CEET) will be devoted to innovation in energy-efficient networks and technologies, with a goal of reducing the impact of telecommunications on the environment.

University of Melbourne Laureate Professor Rod Tucker said, “Today, telecommunications networks in Australia use about one per cent of our energy supply and with increasing demands for bandwidth, this is expected to grow dramatically, unless we find ways to make our networks more efficient.”

The Centre has announced nine new projects in the fields of modelling, transmission and fundamental technology, as part of its focus on driving energy efficiency. It will have a staff of 22 researchers and technology experts.

Alcatel-Lucent said the CEET staff can take advantage of Bell Labs’ experience in generating breakthrough technologies and the University of Melbourne’s world-class research in telecommunications network infrastructure.

Victoria’s Technology Minister Gordon Rich-Phillips said the centre would be one of Australia’s top ICT research facilities. “CEET will position [Victoria] as a hub for ICT research and a place for development and training in ICT and energy-efficient communications,” he said.

CEET will contribute to the GreenTouch program, a global, industry-wide consortium that aims to achieve significant improvement in the energy efficiency of communications networks.
