Global mining research centre to be based in Perth
21 December 2011
German-based chemical company, BASF, will establish a global Research and Development (R&D) and Technology centre in Australia.
In an agreement with Australia’s Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) BASF will lease laboratory and office space at the Australian Minerals Research Centre in Perth.
By the end of 2012 the company expects to employ six researchers on-site to study mineral processing technology for the improvement and modification of thickening and crystalisation processes.
From the beginning of next financial year, the company will also invest in research undertaken at Perth’s Parker Centre, a Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) focussed on hydrometallurgical mineral processing R&D.
Head of BASF’s Oilfield and Mining Chemicals business, Steffen Kudis, believes the company’s collaboration with CSIRO and Australia’s leading researchers will bolster BASF’s global reputation as a mining industry innovator.
"Our vision is to become the leading chemical solutions provider to the mining industry by investing in existing and innovative technologies for mineral processing and metal production of ores." Mr Kudis said.
"To be successful, we are increasing our R&D spending and strengthening our market focused organization. Our research will greatly benefit from the intellectual property generated from the Parker Centre and from our interactions with the participant research groups."
