Australian robots – man’s other best friend 17 February 2012 Australian researchers at La Trobe University are developing emotionally intelligent robots to improve healthcare, communications and social management systems. In partnership with Japan’s Kyoto University and NEC Corporation (NEC), La Trobe University has established the Research Centre for Computers, Communication and Social Innovation (RECCSI) to develop socially intelligent robotics. Since 2009 the centre has worked to develop Information Communication Technologies (ICTs) that map and model the full range of communications between individuals, groups and communities. Prioritising sustainable communities over design and convenience, these ITCs will have application in health and aged care, education, e-tourism, human resources and critical event management. Director of RECCSI, Rajiv Khosla, said the centre’s emotionally intelligent robots could soon be doing everything from helping children with autism to recruiting personnel. “Through collaboration with NEC, Japan, Kyoto University and other international partners we are addressing global problems related to an ageing population, spiralling health-care costs, sustainability of organisations and the environment,” said Khosla.
