Data Alert: Global Report recognises Australia’s high level of opportunity-driven entrepreneurship 20 February 2012 Australia is an innovation-driven economy with a high level of entrepreneurial activity second only to the US. According to the 2011 Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) Report, 10.5 per cent of Australia’s adult population are setting up or own a new business, and 12.3 per cent are expected to start a business within the next three years. The 2011 GEM Report ranks countries according to their entrepreneurial activities, opportunities and goals. Based on interviews with over 140,000 adults in 54 economies, the 13th annual GEM Report estimates that there were 388 million entrepreneurs actively engaged in new businesses during 2011. The Report categorises each of the 54 economies into three main groups: factor-driven, efficiency-driven and innovation-driven. Australia is ranked as an innovation-driven economy, where a high level of new and innovative products is needed to remain competitive.
